Welcome to K'gari
Formerly known as Fraser Island, K’gari is home to long beaches, dramatic coloured-sand cliffs, natural sandblows, rocky headlands and pristine freshwater lakes and streams. It is the world’s largest sand island and is even inscribed in the UNESCO heritage list as having exceptional and universal natural value.
According to UNESCO:
K’gari (Fraser Island) lies just off the east coast of Australia. At 122 km long, it is the largest sand island in the world. Majestic remnants of tall rainforest growing on sand and half the world’s perched freshwater dune lakes are found inland from the beach. The combination of shifting sand-dunes, tropical rainforests and lakes makes it an exceptional site.
Getting there and around
Best things to see
When it comes to natural wonders, you’ll be spoiled for choice on K’gari. Here are just a few of many.
75 Mile Beach
K’gari’s major north-south “sand highway” is an attraction in itself. This seemingly endless stretch of sand can connect you with lots of the island’s other attractions.
Eli Creek
This unique, crystal clear, sand-bottomed creek allows people to float down it’s 400m length. It’s a little bit like a whirlpool ride at a water park but it’s all natural!
Maheno Shipwreck
The SS Maheno washed ashore during a cyclone in 1935. You can now find it on 75 mile beach not too far from Happy Valley. It offers some surreal photo opportunities for those on the gram.
Trusted Travel doesn’t have any immediate plans to visit K’gari but you never know what the future holds. We certainly don’t hate the idea of spending a few day hanging out at Kingfisher Bay Resort 😉
