You can hear a Formula 1 before you see it. It sounds less like a car and more like a fighter jet with a high-pitched “whiiir” as a backing track. At Trusted Travel, we’re used to some awesome events on the domestic Supercars calendar, but nothing can beat the full-throttle sensory experience that is a weekend at the Australian Grand Prix.
We met at Sydney Airport and made our way to Melbourne, checking in to our accommodation at the Travel Lodge in Docklands.
We didn’t waste anytime getting out and about to see some of Central Melbourne’s top sights like Flinders Street Station and Federation Square. We even took our first rides on Melbourne’s iconic tram network.
Thursday morning, we went a bit further afield and went to see the Queen Victoria Markets, Parliament House, Captain Cook’s cottage and much more. We headed to the track in the afternoon to get our bearings and watch the first of 4 Supercars races that were included over the weekend of motorsport. We headed back to the city after the race and continued our trip long quest to find the best burgers in Melbourne.
What’s a trip to Melbourne without revelling in the city’s famed café culture? We grabbed a brunch of eggs benedict with a sunny perch and one traveller remarked that he could happily sit in the sun all day watching the trams go past. But we didn’t have all day! By the afternoon, we were at the track again to see the Formula 1 cars hit the asphalt for their first practice. We sucked up the atmosphere at Motorsport HQ, got in amongst the pits for the Carrera Cup Porches and hit the fence of lakeside straight to see the awesome machines zip past at up to 330km/h.
We ordered pizza in that night … we had a big few days ahead of us.
Saturday was the F1 qualifying! The atmosphere was electric as we saw the world’s greatest race car drivers push their machines to the limit. We were lucky enough to view all the action from an awesome accessible viewing platform overlooking turn 12. We would come back to this same spot the following day for the big race!
We woke on Sunday to a sparkling sunny morning. The motorsport gods couldn’t have planned it any better. We saw some awesome battles in the F3, F2 and Supercars in the lead up to the Formula 1 feature race. After a race that broke records for thrills, spills and safety cars, Max Verstappen of Red Bull Oracle Racing was crowned champion of the Australian Grand Prix. Other all-time greats Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso rounded out the podium.
After the race, we were able to make our way down to Pit Straight to see all the excitement of the post-race atmosphere.
It was a trip we won’t forget anytime soon and we hope to see a few familiar faces later in the year when Trusted Travel returns to Mount Panorama for the Bathurst 1000.
