We started our trip with an overnight stopover in the spectacular, world heritage listed Blue Mountains. After checking in to our cabins in Blackheath, we headed down the road to see the awe-inspiring view from Govetts Leap, one of the premier vistas in the mountains.
We loaded up early on day 2 and started the long drive to Dubbo. The music was blaring, the singing voices in full gusto as we made the long journey west! The drive felt like it was over in the blink of an eye and we rolled into Dubbo with time to head out and look around.
That first afternoon we touched down into the world of heroic doctors, nurses, pilots and outback communities at Dubbo’s new Royal Flying Doctor experience. It was great!
Set across over 700 acres, Western Plains Zoo is the ultimate zoofari experience. Trusted Travel spent the Wednesday morning cruising around the zoo checking out big ticket attractions like the rhinos, elephants, lions, tigers, hippos and much more. We also had an extra safari experience, catching a 4WD trip around the zoo’s savannah which replicates open African grasslands.
That afternoon, after lunch, we headed in to town for some more local sightseeing. Dubbo Gaol is an immersive experience that brings to life the brutality of colonial era crime and punishment. We spent an hour checking it out before heading back to our cabins at the zoo.
We were back at the zoo first thing the next morning for one of the highlights of the trip. We hand fed giraffes! It was a beautiful experience being up so close and personal with these gentle giants. Their heads are much bigger than any of us expected!
We waved goodbye to Dubbo and headed back east. We stayed the final night back in Blackheath and took the opportunity on the last day to explore the Blue Mountains some more including checking out the iconic Three Sisters!
What a trip it was! Dubbo will hold a special place in our memories from now on and we will never forget new friends and the amazing experiences we shared.
