The Ultimate Bucket List for Every Aussie Sports Fan
Australia is home to a handful of the world’s most exciting and iconic sporting events. We’ll have a look at some of those as we dive into the ultimate must-attend list of yearly events for every Australian sports fan.
Repco Bathurst 1000
Rugby League has State of Origin, horse racing has the Melbourne Cup and Australian motorsport has the Bathurst 1000.
Taking place on the side of the picturesque Mt. Panorama, the Bathurst 1000 is the undisputed highlight of the V8 Supercars calendar. The sense of history at this event is palpable as race patrons fondly remember names like Lownes, Whincup, Skaife and Brock while excitedly watching to see who will be crowned king of the mountain.
Trusted Travel has been lucky enough to be there for a full weekend of thrills, spills and high-octane action for the past several years. We will no doubt be there again in 2022 so keep checking our upcoming trips. In the meantime, click the picture below to read last year’s full travel diary.
The Boxing Day Test
In the day and age of the fireworks, dancers and bright uniforms that come with T20 cricket, one event on the traditional cricket calendar still demands the attention of young and old alike.
Taking place on the hallowed turf of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Boxing Day Test marks the centrepiece of Australia’s yearly summer of cricket. Contested every year since 1980, the event routinely draws crowds of upwards of 200,000 over the 5 day event.
The moments leading up to the first ball on Boxing Day delivers arguably the most tense atmosphere in Australian sport.
State of Origin
It’s state against state – mate against mate as the Cane Toads and Cockroaches square off in their yearly series for the ultimate prize in Rugby League. From Lewis and Meninga to Johns and Daley, the epic battles between the titans of yesteryear set the stage for the latest crop of elite players looking to make their mark on Rugby League history.
State of Origin games are generally held at Sydney’s impressive 83,500 capacity Stadium Australia or at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium in front of one of the most raucous crowds in Australia. In recent years games have been held in other major Australian cities such as Melbourne and Perth.
In 2022 Trusted Travel will be right there in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth for every Addo-Carr line break and bone-crunching Papalii tackle. See the itinerary for Sydney by clicking the pic below.
ANZAC Day AFL
Those outside of Melbourne may find it hard to comprehend the scale of support the game of Australian Rules Football garners in the city. Sure, us northerners enjoy the fierce rivalries of Rugby League often played in front of rabid fans at sold out suburban venues but truly nothing in Australian club sport compares to when two of Melbourne’s AFL heavyweights collide.
The “Big 4” Clubs; Richmond, Collingwood, Essendon and Carlton routinely meet each other in front of up to 100,000 spectators on the hallowed turf of the MCG. The biggest scheduled game between these titans occurs each ANZAC when the Essendon Bombers meet the Collingwood Magpies.
Trusted Travel won’t be there this ANZAC Day but we hope to see two “Big 4” clubs play in 2022. Click the photo below for our upcoming Melbourne Footy Mania trip.
Australian Grand Prix
Another one for the motor heads! In April the best drivers in the world descend on Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit for the Australian Grand Prix. Along the Lakeside Drive section of the track the 1000hp beasts of F1 reach speeds of up to 330km/h.
Names like Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Lewis Hamilton and the great Jack Brabham are etched into history as F1 champions of Australia. To see the Australian Grand Prix live is truly to be a part of history.
The Australian Open
Every January, Melbourne plays host to the first Grand Slam event on the yearly tennis calendar. The best players in the world make their way to Australia to compete for $75,000,000 prize money and the right to be called Australian Open champion.
Tennis is widely regarded as a polite spectator sport but try telling that to the crowds in Melbourne when a high-flying, home-grown hero is on a winning run. They can become more than a little bit raucous.
