Stunning Kiama! A not-so-hidden gem on the New South Wales South Coast. Just 30 minutes from Wollongong and 90 minutes to Sydney, it’s no wonder Australia’s capital of ice cream licking is a favourite for people with just one day to escape the grind of the city.
But if you only have the one day, how should you spend your time? There’s so much to see do and eat in this once quaint seaside village that is now a vibrant hub of tourism and leisure.
To make it easier for you, we put together this quick itinerary for a first-time visitor to Kiama.
Things to see
The Blowhole

This one goes without saying. Even if you have never been to Kiama, there’s a good chance you have heard of its most iconic attraction.
According to NSW Tourism:
Kiama’s famous Blowhole is the largest in the world, and when the swell is running from the southeast, you’re in for a real treat. The 2.5 metres opening in the rock face has had its plumes of water recorded at heights of over 30 metres!
Architectural Heritage
Kiama’s wonderful colonial architecture is centred around the bottom end of Manning Street and is conveniently located near the intersection with Terralong Street. The post office and council chambers are two of the more impressive buildings in the precinct. Heritage walk maps can be found at the Kiama Visitor Information Centre. Alternatively you can download a the Kiama Library’s My Place App to guide you around the area.
Kiama Harbour and Fish Markets
Built in the 1870s to cater for the growing shipping trade on the South Coast, these days the tranquil waters of Kiama Harbour are home to a small fleet of fishing vessels and some recreational moorings. Grab some fish n chips and enjoy the serenity.
Saddleback Mountain Lookout
Looming in the range behind Kiama is Saddleback Mountain. Those unfamiliar with the greater Illawarra area should head there first thing in the morning to get their bearings. Otherwise, swing by on your way out of town for glorious afternoon light.
This north facing lookout back over the Illawarra is one of the premier view points in a region that is absolutely spoiled for choice.
Eat!
A few months ago we asked Trusted Travel staff where to find the best places to eat in the Illawarra. The amazing Kelly – Trusted Travel Consultant and undisputed queen of supported holidays – suggested that Kiama Dumpling House serves the best dumplings on the South Coast … and who are we to argue.

There’s great food to be found all up and down Terralong Street so go for a stroll and see what you fancy.
